Ice boating on Frozen Lakes
Ice boating was a popular winter activity on Lake Minnetonka and the Minneapolis city lakes during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Boat races and design competitions were held every year. Ice sailing still exists as a sport today.

Launching at the Olbrich Park ramp on Starkweather Creek, which snakes north along the eastern side of the Atwood neighborhood in Madison, WI.
Following the creek up-stream from Olbrich, near its mouth on Lake Monona, you’ll pass through Olbrich Botanical Garden, including a gold leaf Thai pavilion, just off to the right. Further up the creek, behind the garden and next to a rail line that crosses the creek, is an abandoned beet sugar factory, whose legacy inspired the Old Sugar Distillery in our neighborhood on the isthmus.
